Present Your Bodies as a Living Sacrifice

The title is a paraphrase from Romans 12:1. Most of you think this post is going down the road that we should run and exersise so that we can gloryfy God by staying in shape and keeping our bodies in good working order. God was gracious enough to provide us with health and longevity so we should be good stewards of our bodies. The word sacrifice means we should push ourselves and work hard to stay in shape. While these things may be true I dont think that is what God intended for us to take from the passage. As I was running early this morning the sun was just starting to peak over the horizon. The sky was a beautiful blue and the light from the sun was a mixture of orange and yellow. I started pondering the words in the title. I was challenged several weeks ago to pray each morning that I would present my body as a living sacrifice each day. To do this I must sacrifice some of my wants and desires. I need to not give in to self gratification. I need to present my entire body which includes my brain. My brain represents my thoughts and my thoughts are my soul. I need to give my soul as a living sacrifice. This is the prayer I have been working on each morning.

Listening to God while You Run

I know lots of people listen to music when they run.  I run past them all the time with their ear buds in.  I have never been one to wear ear buds.  I like to hear what is going on around me.  If there is a car coming behind me, a biker passing me, or a faster runner is coming from behind I would like some advanced warning.  Have you ever passed a fellow runner or walker and they didn't know you were there until they saw you out of the corner of their eye?  You know the look when they nearly jump out of their shoes.  Well I can't stand the fear of having that happen.  A few years ago my wife bought a spy belt.  It is a great device that fastens around your waist like a fanny pack but it is very small and compact and fits the contour of what is inside of it.  I used it a couple of time when I had to carry my smart phone with me during a run.  It works well and when my shirt is pulled over it, people can't tell I have it on. On one of those runs it hit me that I could listen to my music while I was using the spy belt.

I soon had a playlist for my runs.  This was great.  I could listen to music to get me pumped during my runs.  One day when life was treating being unkind I left for a run in a depressed mood.  I was definitely not in a mood for my running playlist and its upbeat up-tempo songs.  So I thought I would listen to something else.  I tapped my "Faith" playlist and off I went.  It seemed like some of the songs spoke to my problems and by the end of my run I was not depressed.  It didn't take me long to realize that listening to my "Faith" play list on other runs my be uplifting.  Since that time I take my music on most runs.  There are some days that I do like up-tempo music so I have a playlist that has Christian music that is more upbeat.  Some of my favorite songs on it are Move by MercyMe, Eye On It and Unstoppable by tobyMac, and Every Good Thing by The Afters.  Just this morning tobyMac sang "You sing to me and my heart comes to life"  How fitting.

If you run and listen to Christian music leave a comment and tell us what some of your favorite songs are to run to.

Run Pray Run Pray Run Pray

The Lord provided another beautiful evening for running and I was able to take advantage of it.  Today Praying was on my mind.  There has been a lot of discussion in my life about prayer recently.  Our church had a 72 hour prayer visual at the start of the month and our sermons have focused on prayer.  I will admit that prayer is one of my weaknesses, but many days when I run I talk with the lord.

Today during my run I had a one mile warm up and then 5 fast interval runs with 3 minutes of walking between.  This provided a great opportunity to pray.  During the first mile I was able to think about many things that are going on with my life.  I find it harder to pray if I am giving a lot of effort while running, so during the 3 minute walks between intervals I picked something specific to pray about.  I was able to pray about myself, my sweet wife, my wonderful kids, the new neighbors and our church.  During my cool down I made it a point to start the morning off with a prayer each day.  I will let you know how that goes.

Running Proves that God is Real

Today my run took me down an asphalt path that over looks the Ohio River.  The session today was a relaxed easy run.  No worries about mile splits or times.  It was one of those runs that I am able to observe my surroundings.  The evening was hot (89 degrees) but beautiful.  The evening sun was wrapped in thin wispy clouds.  The sun reflecting off of the river was gorgeous.  The trees were green and many flowers were in full bloom.  As I took in my environment I thought how could this be an accident?  God has put the rules of our universe in place so that we can enjoy such beauty.

I started to think about myself and how much enjoyment I was having pushing my body in the hot air.  How can someone explain the emotions we have?  It must be God that created emotion to separate us from the rest of the animal kingdom.  How can love be explained scientifically?  Can someone explain the love Jesus displayed when he died for our sins?  The more I ran today the more I felt alive.  I like days like today.  No worries, just good feelings.

Why Run with God

Thanks for visiting.  I would like to start by telling why I run with God and how RunningwithGod came into being.  I have been running for several decades and have always enjoyed the activity.  There have been goals for speed and distance but nothing that was as satisfying as having my running be a fellowship with God.  As I have matured as a Christian and went through various life struggles I have found myself praying during some of my runs.  I then started wearing a cross necklace on a leather strap to remind me of my fellowship with God.  For the last year God has touched my heart many times during runs.  I looked for a website or blog that combined my love for the Lord with my love for running.  I couldn't find what I was looking for.  I had a feeling that God wanted me to start a blog that would fill that role.  I kept putting it off until I have finally listened to the Lord and started RunningwithGod.

This site is about God and Running and how to combine the two.  It is not about time, distance or personal records.  In the future I plan on sharing my thought and feelings that I have during each run as I continue to fellowship with the Lord.
